A Brief History of Tesco
Jack Cohen, a Polish-born Jewish immigrant, founded Tesco in 1919. He started his business selling armenia phone number data war surplus tea from a market stall in the East End of London. The company's name comes from the initials of the supplier of the first tea Cohen sold, Thomas Edward Stockwell, and the first two letters of his surname.

Tesco grew rapidly from a small market stall to a major retailer. In 1924 the company opened its first self-service store and in 1931 its first supermarket. Tesco continued to expand throughout the 20th century and by the 1990s it had become one of the largest retailers in the world.

Cohen was a visionary entrepreneur who saw the potential of the supermarket business. He was also an astute businessman who was always looking for ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency. These factors helped Tesco to overgrow in the early years. In the 1920s, Tesco expanded its business to include a supermarket chain.
