"In the summer, we began a gradual shutdown of UMTS networks in the Russian Federation and the transfer of the freed-up frequencies to LTE. In June, the company completely switched off the 3G network in Uglich, Yaroslavl Oblast, and in October, the entire UMTS 2100 network in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast. MTS is also working on refarming the 900 MHz range. At the beginning of this year, MTS refarmed GSM 900 base stations to the LTE standard in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Oblast," he noted.

PJSC MTS has launched belgium telegram a frequency resource distribution functionality using artificial intelligence technology on its mobile network in most regions of the Far East. The innovation has increased the reliability of the connection and the average speed of mobile Internet.

According to a representative of the press service of PJSC MegaFon, in 2023, refarming took place in 53 regions of Russia, and in 2024 already in 75. He noted that the company's management plans to complete it in 2025.

"After refarming, the data transfer speed increases by up to 30%. This affects the quality of service use: the start time of online video downloads is accelerated, the loading time of web pages is reduced, the share of long lags in online gaming is reduced. It is important for us that high quality of communication and data transfer is maintained for subscribers who use phones, tablets and M2M devices without 4G support, so during refarming we do not turn off 3G completely," said a representative of the MegaFon press service.

T2, a Russian mobile operator, has launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology in the Volgograd region using solutions from Russian developer NTC Protey. The service allows making calls on the 4G network without interrupting the Internet session, and also provides instant connection with the interlocutor and high-quality speech transmission.

According to Konstantin Ankilov, CEO of TMT Consulting LLC, Russia may completely abandon 3G in the coming years. He noted that 2G (GSM) is suitable for broad coverage of communications (SMS and phone calls), while LTE is often needed for modern applications.
