From meaningful onboarding and training sessions to mentoring and community resource groups, promoting career development for professionals from underrepresented groups should be a priority. While this may vary from company to company, the bottom line is that you create these opportunities with the input of underrepresented employees. Ask them what resources they need to be successful.

Industry demographics don’t change overnight. In the meantime, social marketers should educate themselves (and their companies) on the contributions underrepresented communities make to internet culture and find ways to intentionally work with them.

McMillian noted that the corporate social industry has long ignored the contributions of non-white communities, especially black communities. “It’s crazy that black and brown creators continue to create social media trends and define culture, but the corporate side of social media is skewing toward white people.”

Mason added that white social media marketers can learn a lot by seeking out content from BIPOC creators. "There are multiple studies on the impact of black Twitter. The internet is made up of many sub-communities. Educating yourself on these sub-communities can expand your worldview and help you become a better, more well-rounded leader and functional manager. Get out there It’s important to stay culturally relevant on social media.”
