Italy just became the first Western country to block ChatGPT over privacy concerns.
The Italian Data Protection Authority has decided to check ChatGPT’s compliance with data protection regulations (GDPR). Among other things, it is said that user data may have been compromised and that minors may have been exposed to inappropriate content. OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, now have 20 days to present a remedial plan.
OpenAI has already disabled ChatGPT for users in Italy at the request skype database of the Italian regulator and assures that it complies with privacy regulations. Now they want to work together to clarify any doubts and restore access to ChatGPT in Italy as soon as possible.
The interesting thing is that this situation could spark a discussion about the regulation and control of artificial intelligence not only in Italy but also in other countries. The Italian decision could prompt other countries to take similar actions, especially when it comes to the protection of personal data and the safety of minor users.
Meanwhile, Google's competing chatbot, Bard, has taken a different approach and made its product available only to select users over the age of 18 to avoid issues with inappropriate content for minors.
This situation may also affect the development of future chatbots and AI. Developers will have to focus more on privacy and security aspects to avoid similar problems.
