1. Challenges and Perspectives of the Highest European Courts Discussion. The International Forum of the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana is hosting a discussion between Professor Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union and Professor Robert Spano, President of the European Court of Human Rights, on Challenges and Perspectives of the Highest European Courts. The discussion, in English, will be moderated by Shaheed Fatima QC (London) and Professor Joseph H. H. Weiler (New York). It will take place on Thursday 27 May 2021, between 16:30 and 18.00 hours CEST (Ljubljana time) by Zoom. Participation is possible upon registration until Friday 21 May. The number of participants is limited.
2. 9th Martens Summer School on International Law. The Summer School organized by the University of Tartu in Estonia, will take place online on 26 – 30 July 2021. Application deadline is 25 May 2021 and the study fee is 50 EUR. In 2021, professors teaching in the summer school include Mykola Gnatovsky (Kyiv), Iulia Motoc (Strasbourg; Bucarest), Alex G. Oude loan database Elferink (Utrecht) and Martins Paparinskis (UCL, London). The course director is Lauri Mälksoo (University of Tartu) and the co-director Dr Alexander Lott (Tartu and Tromso) will hold this year’s Martens lecture. 3. Discussion Group: Legal Pluralism, Voluntary Compliance, and Universal International Law. The SLS International Law Section is hosting a discussion on legal pluralism in international law with Dr Julie Fraser (Assistant Professor at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and the Montaigne Centre at Utrecht University). Julie will discuss the incorporation of local norms, using Islamic law as an example, and how we can promote the universality of international law. Attendees are encouraged to share examples from their own research and exchange views in this informal lunchtime discussion group. 4. Call for Papers: Artificial Intelligence – The New Frontier of Business and Human Rights. The Business and Human Rights Working Group of the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research and the Asser Institute invite abstract submissions for a one-day workshop focusing on the human rights responsibilities of private businesses that produce, sell and use AI technologies, as well as the responsibility of States in regulating private actors in order to safeguard human rights. Suggested topics include: human rights as a legal check on AI; the translation of business and human rights discourse into practice; embedding human rights compliance into AI products; and the use of AI tools in the framework of human rights due diligence processes. Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted to c.l.lane {at} rug(.)nl before 14 June 2021 (please see the call for papers for more information). The workshop will take place on 7 September 2021.
