The Atlas VPN team's analysis is based on data provided by Slowmist Hacked (an aggregator of information on uncovered attacks targeting blockchain projects, applications, and tokens). Monetary losses were calculated based on the exchange rate as of January 12, 2021.
hacks has been Ethereum (ETH) DApps, decentralized applications based on Ethereum smart contracts. In 2020, there were 47 successful attacks targeting ETH DApps, costing victims an estimated $436.36 million, or $9.28 million per hack.
Cryptocurrency exchanges, businesses that allow their customers to trade crypto and other assets, have also been the focus of attacks in the past year. There were 28 crypto exchange hacks in 2020, with a bosnia and herzegovina whatsapp data loss of $300.15 million, or about $10.72 million per hack.
Third on the list are blockchain wallets, digital wallets that allow people to store their cryptocurrencies. Last year, hackers launched 27 successful attacks targeting crypto wallets, stealing $3.03 billion, or about $112.12 million per hack. The nature of blockchain wallets makes them a lucrative target for cybercriminals.
Blockchains themselves also suffered from hacks in 2020. There were 12 successful attacks on various blockchains during the year, earning cybercriminals $5.91 million, or $492,517 per hack.
Next up are Tron DApps and EOS DApps. Like ETH DApps, these are decentralized applications based on specific protocols. Each of these DApps was hacked three times last year. In total, Tron DApp hacks cost victims $10 million, or about $3.33 million per hack, while EOS DApp hacks cost $2.85 million, or about $949,416 each.
Finally, there were two scams involving Ethereum-based tokens in 2020. However, there is no information on how much financial damage these scams caused.
