TH: Due to the great success of e-commerce, many people are looking to start businesses on the Internet. Is it possible to observe this trend?
Diana Joppert: Yes, e-commerce has certainly attracted many new entrepreneurs. The barriers to entry and the fixed costs seem lower than opening a traditional brick-and-mortar business, and that turns out to be one of the factors for this choice. It is also important to realize that although some of the challenges of traditional commerce will not exist in e-commerce, selling on the Internet brings its own challenges. The great advantage is that much of the literature on marketing and digital entrepreneurship is freely available on blogs, on the sites of marketing tools (Facebook and Google have several tutorials) and at events of organizations that support entrepreneurship and promote networking sessions and workshops. On the site meetup.com you can find events and appointments in your city on the most diverse topics related to e-commerce and startups.
TH: What do you think of Brazilian advertising in journalist email list the digital media? Are we still lagging behind other countries? What do we need to learn and apply since our talent is recognized worldwide in other media?
I think we have a slightly younger digital market here, but we have several highly successful examples. One of them is Oppa, a mobile e-commerce company, whose brand was built entirely through digital media. There are several other brands that use digital media very well. I think that in order to really be optimal in those channels, it's important to forget what is done in advertising and traditional media and think in a new way. Digital is instantaneous, so you can't become a slave to planning months and months in advance and stop taking advantage of opportunities that arise on a day-to-day basis. Plug into current issues and see how they relate to your brand, digital marketing happens now, not tomorrow. Another important thing is language, digital media has a very different profile than traditional media, it is a conversation between one person and another and has the characteristic of being more informal; that is a challenge, but it is also an incredible opportunity to really bring your brand to life. Remember that nobody likes people or brands that only talk about themselves. Use your digital media to present content that interests your audience and is not directly related to selling your product; this is essential to generate a strong connection and engagement, which will ensure that your audience pays more attention to your message.
