On March 25, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) restricted access in the Russian Federation to the website of Kamatera Inc., on March 27 - WPEngine Inc., on March 29 - HostGator.com.LLC., on April 1 - Network Solutions LLC., on April 3 - DreamHost LLC., on April 5 - Bluehost Inc., on April 8 - Ionos Inc., and access to the website of DigitalOcean LLC. was restricted on April 10.

The restrictions did not affect hosting providers such as Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), GoDaddy.com LLC, Hetzner Online GmbH and FastComet.

A source close to lithuania whatsapp resource Roskomnadzor told a ComNews correspondent that these companies, being on the "landing" list, remained without restrictions, since they are more difficult to block. "If access to these hosting providers is disabled in the Russian Federation, this will entail consequences. This is a purely technical story, because of which, perhaps, Roskomnadzor is concerned about the functionality of other resources, since the agency is not interested in people speaking negatively about the agency's activities," the source clarified.

The purpose of the federal law of 01.07.2021 No. 236-FZ on the "landing" of foreign IT companies is to establish equal conditions for the activities of Russian and foreign entities on the territory of the Russian Federation. If the daily audience of an information resource is more than 500 thousand users, in order to carry out activities on the territory of the Russian Federation, the owner must create a branch, open a representative office or establish a Russian legal entity that fully represents the interests of the parent company and is the main channel of interaction between regulators and it on the territory of the Russian Federation - otherwise, a number of "coercive measures" are provided for in relation to these companies, up to and including complete blocking.

Chairman of the Regional Public IT Center (ROCIT) Commission on Cloud Technologies, Hosting and Information Security, EdgeCenter CEO Mikhail Shurygin said that in 2023, many attacks were recorded coming from hosting providers within the Russian Federation, and emphasized that the reason for this is the lack of a full-fledged register of companies that provide website hosting services.

Mikhail Shurygin said that attacks from within can be especially effective. "Firstly, they can bypass some security systems designed to block external threats, and secondly, they can use the capacity of Russian servers, which makes it more difficult to block and track them," he said.

Mikhail Shurygin noted that in addition to cyberattacks, one cannot ignore the fact that Western companies often act as distributors of destructive content. "Their platforms can be used to distribute unwanted information that can harm society. And this is a serious problem that also requires elaboration. One of such steps will be a meeting of the ROCIT commission on cloud technologies, hosting and information security, which will be held on April 22," explained Mikhail Shurygin.
